American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," he remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports said travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official said.

On that day, some planes were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Travel at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an mean of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority indicated DFW, the second most active airport in the country, could encounter difficulties from low staffing later in the day.

The FAA warned travelers in the state to consult airlines about updated departure times.

Pressure on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It led a number of air traffic controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as president, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after thirty-five days.
