Barry Manilow to Undergo an Operation for Lung Cancer.

Barry Manilow announced that he was diagnosed with cancer of the lung and will be having an operation.

Spot Found in Initial Phase

The 82-year-old singer, famous for his series of upbeat chart-toppers from "Mandy" established him as one of pop music’s cherished performers, will have a procedure to remove part of his lung in an effort to fight off the illness, which is at an early phase.

“For those who have been following, I recently endured six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a recurrence of another five weeks.

“Despite the fact that I was past the infection and returned to the spotlight at the Westgate Las Vegas, my attentive medical team requested an MRI just to ensure that all was clear.

“The MRI detected a malignant lesion on my lung that needs to be removed. It’s incredible chance (and a skilled doctor) that it was caught so early.”

Concert Delays

He has delayed a string of forthcoming live performances, but stated he would be returning to perform by Valentine’s Day for his long-running residency in Las Vegas.

He added: “The medical team do not believe it has metastasized and I’m undergoing further tests to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiotherapy. Just chicken soup and classic TV.

“I’m eagerly awaiting until I come back to my home away from home in Las Vegas for our Valentine’s weekend concerts.”

A Long Career and Personal Life

Manilow is now in the 16th year of a concert series at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the spotlight and revealed he is gay in 2017, after wedding his partner of many years, Garry Kief confidentially in 2014.

The couple were in a clandestine relationship for in excess of 35 years. Recently, Manilow reflected on how important Kief had been to him during his explosion in popularity in the 1970s.

“When my fame skyrocketed, it was just hectic. And, you know, going back to an lonesome hotel suite, you can get into a lot of trouble if you, you know, you’re by yourself repeatedly,” he said.

“But I found my partner right around when it was exploding. And I no longer had to go back to those isolated suites. I had somebody to cry with or to share joys with.

“I desire that young people don’t have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
