California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I denied it," the governor commented when asked about contemplating a White House bid post the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

The governor's tenure as governor concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any decision is still years away.

"Fate will determine that," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

He has stepped forward as a notable critic of the former president's team, using his online platforms and championing a initiative that would boost the party's House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a recent interview on Fox News. Duffy revealed a strategy to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and warned eliminating the state's ability to grant CDLs.

"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," Duffy said, after a recent fatal crash in California involving an undocumented trucker that led to loss of life and casualties.

His administration highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was withholding $40m from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," the governor's team retorted in a last month's release responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A recent study showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has grown to an average of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of previous highs to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The thought that a person who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the American people."
