Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The clip, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in military or security positions.
"Like us, you all took an pledge to protect and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the 90-second video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline illegal orders, you must reject illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the legal system or our founding principles."
The Former President's Angry Reply
The clip appeared to trigger a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a combined statement censuring the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our nation with exceptional patriotism and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the safety of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical digital publications and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who care for this United States and took an oath to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the constitution and duty to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "All citizens must unite and censure the president's calls for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Governmental Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress instructing military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in American history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the representative stated. "There are active officials of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can result in chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
