Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Community members disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.
In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their daughters' safe return.
Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
