Emerging Trump Doctrine Points to Europe's Core Issue: A Supposed Shortfall of Xenophobia?

Throughout his first term, commentators often suggested that the former president's remarks should be taken seriously rather than literally. However, real-world experience suggest that this approach may have got it backwards.

An emergent American strategic document coupled with multiple comments from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and the former president have precipitated what could be one of the most severe crises for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has underpinned peace and democracy in Europe since World War II.

From Financial Contributions to Cultural Anxiety

Whereas Trump's earlier critique focused on Europe's alleged failure to pay for its own defense, his vision has now embraced a far more alarming perspective.

Tinged with racial prejudice and a staggering contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has issued warnings about the risk of societal collapse on a continent he barely knows and has predominantly viewed from a distance.

"A lengthy discussion lacking in clear ideological coherence is instead full of something else: the confused fear of an ageing white man facing demographic shifts."

This paranoid worldview, which has already influenced contentious American border and law enforcement approaches, is now clearly to be shaping Washington's prism of Europe.

A Xenophobic Thesis

According to this logic, immigration from developing nations leads to a cultural dilution of European countries, rendering them "weak" under "foolish" leaders and paving the way for their eventual decline. This is an openly xenophobic ideology, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing nationalist movements across Europe.

Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is not new, its meaning for European security are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his Maga acolytes—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the dissolution of the EU—all politics is inherently transactional. However, while the previous argument was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a decadent Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its shift toward diversity.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these ideas in a form of rhetorical loop. He acknowledges that the Kremlin desires a weak Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and in exposing the rifts in the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—all while claiming it's not his "fault".

All of this is unfolding at perhaps the most critical juncture for Europe in decades, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and escalating provocations across the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for not listening to his allies.

Reactions from Allies

This situation requires a robust response from capitals across Europe. Although certain figures, such as Germany's leader, have been blunt in their rebuttals, including the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have continued with a policy of attempting to appease the White House.

Recently, the UK government refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

They said, "The Prime Minister enjoys a productive partnership with the American leader and a strong relationship with the London mayor, and is committed to cooperating with each to achieve stronger results for the British public."

The undeniable truth is that Trump means what he says and says what he means repeatedly. It is past time to abandon the pretense otherwise.
