The nation's security cabinet has formally approved the recognition of nineteen fresh outposts in the contested Palestinian territories, signaling a ongoing campaign for community development.

Far-right Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and put forward the step together with Defense Chief Israel Katz, declared that the move was aimed at preventing the formation of a sovereign Palestine.

Under international law, Jewish communities in the occupied West Bank are viewed as in violation of international law.

The move has drawn condemnation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has said that Israel's "persistent" growth of communities heightens tensions, curtails Palestinian access to land, and undermines the prospects of a independent Palestinian state.

Escalating Unrest and Political Fallout

Violence in the region has increased sharply since the hostilities in the Gaza Strip erupted in the autumn of 2023, adding to concerns that the growth of communities could deepen Israel's occupation and weaken the prospects for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The concept of two states envisions the formation of a Palestinian state in the Palestinian territories, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its seat of government, roughly along the boundaries that existed before the 1967 Six-Day Arab-Israeli war.

Upon assuming leadership in late 2022, the incumbent government in Jerusalem has significantly increased the authorization of fresh communities and started the legalisation process for unauthorised settler outposts, designating them as "neighbourhoods" of existing settlements.

Ongoing Expansion

The most recent decision pushes the overall count of settlements authorized over the preceding 36 months to 69, according to Smotrich.

These authorizations are announced just days after the United Nations said that settlement expansion had reached its peak since the year 2017.

The newest batch of approvals includes the rebuilding of two communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were removed almost two decades ago.

In a previous move, Israel gave the nod to 22 additional communities in the occupied West Bank - described as the biggest wave of approvals in many years.

Additionally, the government also approved blueprints in August to construct more than 3,000 homes in the controversial E1 area between the capital and the Maale Adumim settlement, a initiative that had been on hold for decades amid fierce foreign opposition.
