The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
